Astrology, chapter 5 of 13
The outer planets
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are invisible to the naked eye and were discovered in modern times (1781, 1846, 1930). Each discovery coincided with the kind of upheaval its planet came to symbolise. They stay in one sign for 7 to 30 years, so their sign is generational; what makes them personal is their house and their aspects to your personal planets and angles. They represent forces larger than the ego, the collective unconscious breaking into individual life.
Modern astrologers gave them co-rulerships: Uranus → Aquarius, Neptune → Pisces, Pluto → Scorpio. Traditional astrologers keep Saturn, Jupiter and Mars as the rulers of those signs. You can use both: traditional ruler for concrete matters, modern ruler for psychological depth.
♅︎ Uranus: The Awakener, The Rebel, Lightning
In the deck: The Fool, Uranus and its cards
Modern ruler: Aquarius; Exalted (modern, disputed): Scorpio; Cycle: ~84 years, ~7 years per sign; Discovered: 1781, era of the American and French Revolutions and the Industrial Revolution
Mythology: Ouranos, the primordial sky, who covered Gaia (Earth) every night and pushed his children back into her womb because he couldn't stand their imperfection, until Kronos castrated him. Astrologers also connect Uranus with Prometheus, the Titan who stole fire from the gods for humanity and was chained to a rock as punishment. That's the real Uranian myth: liberating knowledge, revolt against the gods, and the price of genius.
Archetype: The Rebel, the Revolutionary, the Genius, the Outsider, the Awakener. It's the sudden flash of insight, the break from the past.
Keywords: freedom, revolution, sudden change, shocks, originality, innovation, technology, electricity, astrology itself, eccentricity, independence, liberation, the unexpected.
In a reading: house shows where you need freedom, where you're unconventional and where life delivers sudden changes; aspects to personal planets electrify them (Uranus–Venus: unconventional love; Uranus–Moon: emotional restlessness).
Uranus opposition (~age 40–42): the mid-life crisis archetype, the sudden urge to break free of the life you've built.
Light: genius, liberation, authenticity, progress, awakening. Shadow: chaos, alienation, rebellion for its own sake, coldness, instability, fanaticism.
♆︎ Neptune: The Mystic, The Dreamer, The Ocean
In the deck: The Hanged Man, Neptune and its cards
Modern ruler: Pisces; Exalted (modern, disputed): Cancer or Leo; Cycle: ~165 years, ~14 years per sign; Discovered: 1846, era of photography, anaesthesia, Romanticism and Spiritualism
Mythology: Poseidon, god of the sea, earthquakes and horses, the vast, uncontrollable depth. Astrologically Neptune is also linked with Dionysus, god of wine, ecstasy and dissolution of the self, and with the drowned, mystical, oceanic states of consciousness. The ocean is the image: everything boundaryless, where the self dissolves into the whole.
Archetype: The Mystic, the Saviour / Victim, the Artist, the Dreamer. The longing to return to oneness, through spirituality, art, love, or escape.
Keywords: dreams, imagination, spirituality, transcendence, compassion, illusion, deception, confusion, glamour, film, music, drugs and alcohol, sacrifice, the unconscious, mysticism, fog, dissolution.
In a reading: house shows where you idealise, where boundaries blur, where you can be inspired, or deceived and disillusioned; aspects to personal planets make them more sensitive, imaginative and elusive.
Light: compassion, artistic vision, spiritual devotion, intuition, imagination. Shadow: escapism, addiction, self-deception, victimhood, martyrdom, manipulation through vagueness.
♇︎ Pluto: The Underworld, Death & Rebirth, Power
In the deck: The Aeon, Pluto and its cards
Modern ruler: Scorpio; Exalted (modern, disputed): Leo or Aries; Cycle: ~248 years, 12–30 years per sign (elliptical orbit); Discovered: 1930, era of fascism, the atomic bomb, depth psychology; Reclassified a dwarf planet in 2006; astrologers still use it fully. Pluto entered Aquarius in 2024 and stays there until 2043.
Mythology: Hades, lord of the underworld and its hidden wealth (Plouton = "the rich one"), who abducted Persephone into his realm. Persephone's descent, her eating of the pomegranate and her yearly return are the Plutonian cycle: forced descent, transformation in the dark, rebirth. Also connected with Inanna's descent, where she is stripped at seven gates and hung dead on a hook before returning; and Osiris, dismembered and reassembled. In Egypt, Anubis as guide of the dead.
Archetype: The Shadow (Jung), the Destroyer / Transformer, the Phoenix, the Alchemist working with the nigredo (blackening). Pluto is power, taboo and what we hide.
Keywords: transformation, death and rebirth, power, control, obsession, the shadow, taboo, sexuality, secrets, psychology, crisis, compulsion, other people's resources, inheritance, the occult, regeneration, elimination.
In a reading: house shows where you face power struggles, intensity and total transformation; where things must die in order to be reborn; aspects to personal planets intensify them to obsession and depth (Pluto–Sun: power as life theme; Pluto–Venus: all-or-nothing love).
Light: regeneration, psychological insight, courage to face darkness, empowerment, healing. Shadow: manipulation, domination, obsession, destruction, paranoia, abuse of power.
