Astrology, chapter 4 of 13

The social planets

Jupiter and Saturn move slowly enough that people born a year or two apart often share their signs. They bridge the personal and the collective: how you grow into society (Jupiter) and how society shapes and tests you (Saturn). Together they're the classic pair of expansion and contraction, the "greater benefic" and "greater malefic."

♃︎ Jupiter: The Sage, The King of Gods, Grace

In the deck: Fortune, Jupiter and its cards

Rules: Sagittarius & Pisces (traditional); Exalted: Cancer; Detriment: Gemini & Virgo; Fall: Capricorn; Cycle: ~12 years, ~1 year per sign (the "Jupiter return" at 12, 24, 36…); Day: Thursday; Metal: tin

Mythology: Zeus, who overthrew his father Kronos and freed his swallowed siblings, then ruled Olympus as sky-father, law-giver and god of hospitality and oaths. His endless affairs and offspring reflect Jupiter's fertility and excess. Babylonian Marduk, who defeated the chaos-dragon Tiamat and built the ordered cosmos from her body. Jupiter is the principle of meaning, abundance and cosmic order.

Archetype: The Sage, the Teacher, the Priest, the Benevolent King, the Senex in his generous aspect. It's the drive toward meaning, faith and growth.

Keywords: expansion, growth, luck, opportunity, abundance, wisdom, philosophy, religion, higher education, law, long-distance travel, foreigners, generosity, optimism, excess, the liver, hips and thighs.

In a reading: sign shows how you seek meaning and where you find faith; house shows where life tends to be generous, where you grow, and where you overdo it.

Light: generosity, wisdom, faith, humour, mentorship, good fortune. Shadow: arrogance, dogmatism, self-righteousness, overpromising, gluttony, waste, the guru complex.

♄︎ Saturn: The Elder, Father Time, The Great Teacher

In the deck: The Universe, Saturn and its cards

Rules: Capricorn & Aquarius (traditional); Exalted: Libra; Detriment: Cancer & Leo; Fall: Aries; Cycle: ~29.5 years, ~2.5 years per sign (the "Saturn return" at ~29, ~58, ~88); Day: Saturday; Metal: lead

Mythology: Kronos, the Titan who castrated his father Ouranos with a sickle, then swallowed his own children out of fear of being overthrown, until Zeus escaped and dethroned him. The Roman Saturn is also the ruler of the lost Golden Age, celebrated in the Saturnalia, when order was temporarily reversed. Later conflated with Chronos (Time), giving us Father Time with his scythe and hourglass. Saturn was the outermost visible planet: the boundary of the known cosmos, the guardian of the threshold.

Archetype: The Senex (old man), the Father / Judge, the Guardian of the Threshold, the Grim Reaper, the Teacher who teaches through difficulty. Saturn is where you meet reality, limits and time.

Keywords: structure, discipline, responsibility, limitation, time, delay, fear, authority, karma, maturity, mastery, boundaries, loss, old age, isolation, bones, teeth, skin, the knees.

In a reading: sign shows how you handle responsibility and fear; house shows where life feels hard, slow or blocked at first, and where, with effort and time, you build real, lasting mastery. Saturn's gifts come late.

The Saturn return (~age 27–30): the moment Saturn returns to its natal position. Commonly a period of crisis and maturation, the end of youthful illusions, major commitments or break-ups, career redefinition. What was built on false foundations collapses; what was real consolidates.

Light: integrity, patience, endurance, wisdom, self-mastery, authority earned. Shadow: fear, rigidity, depression, coldness, control, scarcity mindset, self-punishment, tyranny.
