Astrology, chapter 1 of 13
Start here: the grammar of a chart
A birth chart (natal chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. Everything in astrological reading comes down to four building blocks. Learn this sentence and you can read any placement:
A planet (WHAT) expresses itself through a sign (HOW) in a house (WHERE), and talks to other planets through aspects (IN DIALOGUE WITH).
| Component | Question it answers | Think of it as | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planet | What drive or function? | The actor / the god | Mars = drive, desire, aggression |
| Sign | How does it express? | The costume / the style | Mars in Scorpio = strategic, secretive, relentless |
| House | Where in life does it play out? | The stage / the arena | Mars in the 10th = career, public ambition |
| Aspect | How does it relate to other energies? | The conversation / the plot | Mars square Saturn = drive meets obstruction; frustration forged into discipline |
So "Mars in Scorpio in the 10th house square Saturn" reads: a relentless, strategic will (Mars in Scorpio) aimed at public status and career (10th), repeatedly tested by authority, delay and limits (square Saturn), which ultimately builds formidable endurance.
Three layers of meaning for every symbol
Every planet, sign and house in this wiki is described on three levels. A skilled reader moves between them:
- Mythological, the god, story or image behind the symbol. This is the narrative layer: it tells you the plot the energy tends to play out.
- Archetypal / psychological, the Jungian layer: the inner figure, drive or complex (the Hero, the Mother, the Trickster, the Shadow). This is what the symbol means inside a person.
- Practical / traditional, keywords, life areas, body parts, professions, events. This is what the symbol looks like in the world.
Each also has a light (integrated) expression and a shadow (unconscious, overdone or wounded) expression. The same Saturn can be the wise elder or the cold tyrant; the chart shows the energy, not the level of consciousness it's lived at.
Two traditions you'll see referenced
- Traditional / Hellenistic astrology (Ptolemy, Vettius Valens, medieval Arabic and Latin astrologers): uses the seven visible planets (Sun to Saturn), whole-sign houses, dignities and sect. More predictive and concrete.
- Modern / psychological astrology (Alan Leo, Dane Rudhyar, Liz Greene, Howard Sasportas): adds Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and asteroids; focuses on personality, growth and the psyche, heavily influenced by Jung.
This wiki uses both: traditional rulers and dignities for structure, modern and mythic material for depth.
How to use these chapters
Read chapters 1–2 first (the grammar and the elements). Then treat 3–9 as reference entries you look up placement by placement. Chapter 10 (dignities) tells you how strong or comfortable a planet is. Chapter 11 connects astrology to the Hermetic system (tarot, Kabbalah, metals). Chapter 12 is the actual reading method, how to put everything together into one coherent story.
