Astrology, chapter 2 of 13
Elements and modalities
Every sign is one element (what kind of energy) combined with one modality (what that energy does). Four elements × three modalities = the twelve signs. If you understand this table, you can reconstruct any sign's character from scratch.
The four elements
The elements come from Empedocles and were systematised by Aristotle and Hippocrates (the four humours). Jung later mapped them onto his four psychological functions.
| Element | Signs | Quality | Jungian function | Humour / temperament | Light | Shadow |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fire 🜂 | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Hot & dry, spirit, will, inspiration | Intuition | Choleric | Courage, vision, vitality, faith | Arrogance, impatience, burnout |
| Earth 🜃 | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Cold & dry, matter, form, the body | Sensation | Melancholic | Reliability, skill, patience, embodiment | Rigidity, materialism, stagnation |
| Air 🜁 | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Hot & wet, mind, connection, ideas | Thinking | Sanguine | Clarity, communication, objectivity | Detachment, overthinking, coldness |
| Water 🜄 | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Cold & wet, feeling, soul, depth | Feeling | Phlegmatic | Empathy, intuition, emotional depth | Moodiness, manipulation, drowning in feeling |
Reading tip: count how many planets (especially Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Mercury, Venus, Mars) fall in each element. A dominant element shows the person's native language; a missing element often shows where they overcompensate or feel foreign (e.g. no earth → struggles with routine, may become obsessively practical to compensate).
Polarity: fire and air are yang / masculine / active / outward; earth and water are yin / feminine / receptive / inward. Opposite signs are always complementary elements (fire–air, earth–water).
The three modalities (qualities)
| Modality | Signs | Function | Seasonal position | Light | Shadow |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | Initiates, starts, leads | Begins each season (equinoxes & solstices) | Leadership, initiative | Starts but doesn't finish; bossy |
| Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | Sustains, stabilises, concentrates | Middle of each season | Loyalty, endurance, focus | Stubbornness, resistance to change |
| Mutable | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Adapts, disperses, transitions | End of each season | Flexibility, learning, versatility | Scattered, unreliable, inconsistent |
The grid that builds the zodiac
| Cardinal | Fixed | Mutable | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, the spark | Leo, the steady flame | Sagittarius, the wildfire that spreads |
| Earth | Capricorn, the architect | Taurus, the fertile field | Virgo, the harvest, sorted |
| Air | Libra, the dialogue begun | Aquarius, the fixed idea / ideal | Gemini, the messenger |
| Water | Cancer, the spring / source | Scorpio, the deep still lake | Pisces, the ocean everything returns to |
Fixed-sign note: the four fixed signs correspond to the four living creatures of Ezekiel and Revelation, the Bull (Taurus), Lion (Leo), Eagle (Scorpio) and Man/Angel (Aquarius). They appear on the four corners of the Wheel of Fortune and The World tarot cards, and as the symbols of the four Evangelists.
