Astrology, chapter 7 of 13
The twelve houses
The houses divide the sky around the birthplace into twelve sectors, based on the exact time and place of birth. While signs are about the sky's rotation over the year, houses are about the Earth's rotation over the day: the whole zodiac passes through all twelve houses every 24 hours. That's why the birth time matters so much, a four-minute difference can shift the Ascendant by a degree.
Houses are arenas of life. A planet in a house brings its energy into that area. An empty house isn't unimportant, look at the sign on its cusp and where that sign's ruler is placed.
House systems
- Whole Sign (oldest, Hellenistic): the sign on the Ascendant becomes the entire 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Clean and easy; popular with traditional astrologers.
- Placidus (most common in modern Western astrology): divides by time; houses can be unequal and at high latitudes (like Berlin) can become quite distorted.
- Equal House: 30° houses starting from the exact Ascendant degree.
- Koch, Porphyry, Regiomontanus, Campanus: other quadrant systems.
Tip: if a planet sits near a house cusp and changes house between systems, read both, the meaning often blends.
Angular, succedent, cadent
| Type | Houses | Function | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Angular | 1, 4, 7, 10 | Action, visibility, the pillars of life (self, home, partner, career) | Strongest, planets here are powerful and visible |
| Succedent | 2, 5, 8, 11 | Stabilising, resources, what you accumulate | Moderate |
| Cadent | 3, 6, 9, 12 | Learning, adapting, transition, preparation | Weakest traditionally, more internal / hidden |
The hemispheres
- Eastern half (houses 10–3, left side, around the Ascendant): self-directed; life shaped by your own choices.
- Western half (houses 4–9, right side, around the Descendant): other-directed; life shaped through relationships.
- Southern half (houses 7–12, top of the chart): public, visible, outward.
- Northern half (houses 1–6, bottom of the chart): private, personal, inward.
Traditional joys
In Hellenistic astrology each planet has a house where it "rejoices": Mercury, 1st, Moon, 3rd (Goddess), Venus, 5th (Good Fortune), Mars, 6th (Bad Fortune), Sun, 9th (God), Jupiter, 11th (Good Spirit), Saturn, 12th (Bad Spirit).

Archetypal reading of the houses
The houses also tell the story of a life as it unfolds, a map of consciousness moving outward and back again:
- I emerge, the birth of the self (1st)
- I possess, discovering the body and its resources (2nd)
- I name, language and the near world (3rd)
- I belong, roots and the inner home (4th)
- I create, joy and self-expression (5th)
- I refine, work, discipline, the body's maintenance (6th)
- I meet the Other, relationship; the self meets its mirror (7th)
- I merge and die, intimacy, shared power, the descent into the underworld (8th)
- I seek meaning, the journey, the philosophy, the god (9th)
- I achieve, the summit, the public calling (10th)
- I belong to the future, the tribe, the ideal (11th)
- I dissolve, the return to the source, the hidden, the sacred (12th)
Shadow notes: the 6th, 8th and 12th are the traditional "dark houses" (they don't aspect the Ascendant in whole-sign houses), associated with illness, death and hidden trouble. Psychologically they are the houses of healing, transformation and transcendence, where the deepest inner work happens.
