Astrology, chapter 9 of 13

Angles and sensitive points

The four angles: the cross of the chart

The angles are the most personal points in a chart, because they change every few minutes. Together they form a cross, the "cross of matter", that anchors the chart to the Earth. Any planet within ~5° of an angle is extremely prominent.

Angle Where Cusp of Meaning
Ascendant (ASC / Rising) Eastern horizon, the sign rising at birth 1st house The mask and the doorway: body, appearance, first impressions, instinctive approach to life, the lens through which you meet the world. Its sign's ruler is the chart ruler, the most important planet in the chart
Descendant (DSC) Western horizon, the sign setting 7th house What you seek and project in others; the partner you attract; your "disowned" qualities
Midheaven (MC / Medium Coeli) Highest point of the sky 10th house (in quadrant systems) Public role, career direction, reputation, life's calling, how you want to be remembered
Imum Coeli (IC) Lowest point, beneath the Earth 4th house Roots, private self, ancestry, the psychological foundation, the place you retreat to

Mythic image: the Ascendant is dawn and birth; the MC is noon and achievement; the Descendant is sunset and union with another; the IC is midnight and the underworld, the four stations of the Sun's journey, like Ra's barque.

☊︎ ☋︎ The Lunar Nodes: The Dragon's Head and Tail

The nodes are where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path (where eclipses happen). They move backward through the zodiac, ~18.6 years per cycle, about 1.5 years per sign. They're always exactly opposite each other.

Myth: in Hindu myth, the demon Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality; Vishnu beheaded him, and his immortal head (Rahu) and body (Ketu) chase and swallow the Sun and Moon, causing eclipses. In medieval Western astrology they're the Caput Draconis and Cauda Draconis, Dragon's Head and Tail.

Read the nodes by sign and house axis (e.g. North Node in 10th / South Node in 4th = move from private comfort to public calling).

⚷︎ Chiron: The Wounded Healer

A small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus (discovered 1977), ~50-year cycle; the "Chiron return" happens around age 50.

Myth: Chiron, the wise and gentle centaur, teacher of Achilles, Asclepius and Jason, master of medicine, music and archery. Accidentally struck by one of Heracles' arrows dipped in Hydra venom, an incurable wound, but as an immortal he couldn't die. He finally traded his immortality to free Prometheus and was placed among the stars.

Meaning: your deepest, most persistent wound, and precisely where you become a healer, teacher or guide for others. What can't be fixed but can be transformed into wisdom.

⚸︎ Black Moon Lilith: The Dark Feminine

Not a physical body: the lunar apogee, the point of the Moon's orbit farthest from Earth. ~9-year cycle.

Myth: Lilith, in Jewish folklore Adam's first wife, created from the same earth as him, who refused to lie beneath him and left Eden rather than submit; later demonised as a night spirit. Connected with Mesopotamian lilitu demons.

Meaning: the raw, untamed, exiled part of the psyche, where you refuse to be controlled, where shame and taboo gather, and your primal sexuality and rage. Also your independent power.

⊗ The Part (Lot) of Fortune

A calculated point from Hellenistic astrology. Day chart: ASC + Moon − Sun. Night chart: ASC + Sun − Moon. It shows where the body and material fortune flourish, prosperity, health and ease. Its companion, the Lot of Spirit (the reverse formula), shows the mind, will and deliberate action.
